Summer Trends ’23… From maxi skirts to heart motifs, Paula Dsouza lets you in on the ultimate guide to summer fashion!
Who doesn’t love summer? The season for the best fashion is back and at its finest! Summer brings with it a completely new mindset and, more importantly, a completely new wardrobe. It creates a shift from neutral coats and boots to fun, colourful and light pieces. If you’re walking on sunshine, you may as well look stunning doing it! Here are a few trending styles that will help you do exactly that:

All Denim Everything –
If you are looking for a style that has been featured in over half of all the runway shows, you can stop here! Denim, if anything, has been catnip for designers off late. It doesn’t just restrict itself to jeans. This season we’re going all out — denim dresses, skirts, jackets and even co-ord sets! This fabric was seen at Givenchy, Burberry and many more high-end brands. What are you waiting for? Any denim purchase is a good denim purchase this season!

Boudoir-esque
Yet another element of the feminine aesthetic brings a lingerie-like vibe to the table. This includes lace detailing and frilly trims, which structurally hints at a delicate and sensual feel. This is different from previous trends because we no longer are layering over a dainty bralette. Versace, JW Anderson and Prada are a few of the brands that celebrate feminine beauty and have made the bold move of covering nothing through these boudoir-esque styles. So wear your best lingerie; it’s no longer meant to be hidden.

Maxing Out The Mini –
Part of the current hyper feminine aesthetic is a super long sleek maxi skirt. This is a huge summer trend. The maxi is officially the new mini, be it silky flowing skirts or a more rigid denim. Throw in a slit or two, and you are good to go. A melange of cottage-core and structural simplicity will elevate your summer looks. Many celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Emma Chamberlain and Elsa Hosk have been pictured wearing this trend.

All That Glitters –
Everything from metallics and sequins to chrome is trending this season, and it isn’t just in the form of an accessory. Almost every high-end designer’s summer collection has seen chrome jeans, jackets, skirts and even bustiers. It reminisces the ‘90s and, at the same time, resembles the fundamentals of futurecore. These styles have been seen at the Michael Kors, and Gucci shows to name a few.

Drop The Rise –
Say goodbye to your high-rise trousers because low-rise is here to stay! This trend has been a long time coming, and it’s finally here. Many celebrities and bloggers have been spotted wearing longer tops with low-rise jeans, switching up the common trend of wearing crop tops with high-rise jeans. Moreover, this leaves more space for body chains which are also trending this summer! Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid are a few celebrities who have been pictured wearing this trend very often.

Balletcore Meets Business –
Balletcore has been in the background for a while, with designers incorporating its essence elementally. However, what we have been seeing a lot this season, especially at shows like Gucci, are core features of balletcore being brought right to the foreground. This includes using ballet pumps, silk and tulle fabric and a lot of ribbons. Moreover, this season, business chic has adopted the basics of this trend, which is why we see a lot of short pleated skirts and pastel co-ord sets. Step up your office looks by incorporating a small amount of ballet!

Texture Play–
A lot is happening this season when it comes to texture. Designers have been incorporating many sheer fabrics and crochet features into their pieces. The whole idea of sheer on sheer topped with a little crochet is a great play on depth and texture, and also happens to be a light and breezy way to bring layering into your summer looks still.

Romantic Motifs –
We’re seeing a lot of hyper feminine detailing along with feminine motifs this season. A copious number of designer brands like Valentino and Victoria Beckham have been using heart, bow and flower accents. These motifs are meant to pay homage to the cultural efflorescence of women’s fashion and the dreamy allure of love. So if you are looking for trendy prints this summer, you know what to lean towards!

Ergo, Cargo –
This season has been THE season for cargo pockets, as pictured at the Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton shows. Cargo jeans, cargo jackets, cargo skirts and cargo everything! This trend has been a major part of the ‘Motocross’ aesthetic, bringing a sporty biker-esque feel to streetwear. Athleisure has dominated the fashion industry for a while, making comfort key. Cargo pockets add a new benefit to this where we aren’t just comfortable, but functional.

Key Lime Pie –
Lime is the colour of the season, and it’s giving eccentric meets muted, which is a perfect transition into spring! Almost every designer, including Michael Kors and Givenchy, has incorporated this colour into their shows! Fret not; if you are a neutral lover and any colour seems terrifying, all you have to do is add an accent. This means you get to wear all the neutral you want and still be trendy. Add elements of lime to your outfits, throw on some lime-coloured sunglasses or wear a lime belt, and your outfit will look stunning.
Accessories

Modern Blair Waldorf –
THE headband is making its way back into fashion. Multiple fashion influencers and celebrities have been pictured jumping onto this trend. The idea is to wear a cloth headband so that it fully covers your hairline. You can go full girly and do pinks, or you could go grunge and use mesh cloth bands — whatever you seem to be in the mood for!

Dainty No More –
Hailey Bieber, today’s fashion icon, has fully approved of this trend and embraces elevated simplicity through a statement accent earring. These can range from chunky gold earrings to the long swooping kind. Why limit yourself to being just ‘That Girl’ when you can be so much more?
As American Fashion Designer Marc Jacobs once said, “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.” Get living – glamour awaits.
